Thank you for coming to the BSD Certification.

This Certification was created for these 4 important reasons.

    • To Promote BSD and Its Use
    • To Obtain Funds to Donate to BSD
    • To Help BSD Admins Improve Their Working Situations
    • To Demonstrate to the Corporate World That BSD Is an Asset

First, We would like to promote BSD and its use. Having used FreeBSD for some years now, We are greatful for its existance. We are often disappointed when a company chooses to provide most their support for Windows or Linux and does not include support for BSD. Hopefully, by providing BSD Certifications, it will become evident that including support for BSD is advantageous to all companies currently supporting windows or linux. It is my hope that hardware manufacturers will take the time to write a BSD driver, or at least provide BSD programmers the resources they need to create a driver themselves; and that software developers will take time to compile BSD versions of their products, especially gaming products.

Second, We would like to create a company that generates enough revenue that a significant portion can be donated to BSD and it support. It is my hope that enough revenue is generated that significant donations can be made to FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD. Eventually, it would be wonderful to have certifactions in all of those catagories, and each company would get a portion of the proceeds for each test taken. This be an added asset to provide them with the funds needed to continue the development of BSD distributions. These funds will hopefully help increase the amount of hardware and software that run on a BSD distribution.

Third, We would like to provide a method whereby those who have spent the time and effort to learn BSD can obtain documented proof of holding such knowledge in their brains. A person could write on their resume that they have supported BSD for X amount of years, they can say they have on the job experience, but they cannot prove their knowledge in an interview or an employee evaluation. Also, many poeple have used BSD at home or throughout school for years and may have more knowledge than many BSD aministrators, however, because they have not used or supported BSD in a career, it is more difficult for them to prove their knowledge when seeking a career in this field. Hopefully, certifications resolve this issue, allowing all who claim to have BSD knowledge a certificate that backs up their claim.

Fourth, to remove excuses corporations may have for not using BSD. Corporations seem to want engineers to be certified. In fact, they seem to want to use products for which their IT guys can obtain certifations. We once read of a corporation that refused to use certain hardware or software because they did not provide certifications. This corporation required the use of a product for which their IT guys could be certified. That sounds silly to me, but it is the reality we have to face in this world. Corporations are more likely to use BSD if they can show a paper certification to management that their engineers know BSD.
